On Tuesday evening I went to Wembley Stadium. Not very unusual but it wasn't to play football, watch a game or see a concert. In fact, quite the opposite, I had the honour of presenting the UK Project Controls Social Impact of 2022 at the Project Controls Expo UK Awards. It was a fabulous evening celebrating the achievements of the companies and individuals across the Project Controls industry. It never ceases to amaze me the fantastic work that goes on to deliver project outcomes and the lasting impact these projects leave behind. Congratulations to all the finalists and of course the winners MACE/WSP for their work on the Rosalind Franklin Laboratory.
Jacqui Lees - Director at Atkins

You have made Project Controls "sexy" and this will attract the very capable young professions who
in the past have considered our profession uninteresting and boring.
Our profession needs this platform to bring the global community together to celebrate Project Controls, and very importantly encourage our young professions to participate and provide the networking that we all require.
Project Controls has always been considered the poor relation to Project Management, and at long last,
I can foresee this trend being reversed.
On a personal note, may I sincerely thank you for what you have done and achieved with Project Controls. I have always been very passionate about our profession,
and it really makes me feel so proud to see how it has progressed because of what you have done.
Thank you so much for inviting me to participate (and I hope that you continue to do so!).
With my very best wishes to you and your very efficient team.

Well done.I hope that my talk was well received. Most of the audience had thinned out by 16:00, but there were enough people there to make it worthwhile.
My talk provided a very stark contrast to all the other speakers; it introduces some brand new thinking that will disrupt some of the established thinking.
I hope that I helped you to connect to a new audience too. It generated a lot of traffic and ‘likes'.If you’d like me to present at any future events then please let me know. I have also invoiced my expenses for the event. All the very best.

The ECITB Trailblazer Project Controls Apprenticeship was formally launched at the Emirates Stadium/London ,on Thursday 16th November 2017. The significance of this is ; that the ECITB courses are the only Project Controls training that have been vetted and accredited to UK-Gov' standards .
The addition of the new Apprenticeship allows access to proper training, with low entry level requirements but after training (the higher training units) are equivalent to BSc/MSc degree level . With this type of training, on the job experience is gained right alongside the academic and computer training. For any companies in the UK-Gov ' training Levy scheme, there are extremely good incentives offered (look on ECITB website for details) . The ECITB training courses are the only courses available which correctly recognise Project Controls as a separate/unique Profession and not as a sub-set of any other profession. One of the biggest complaints from all planning and controls professionals was that there was no formal training or recognition for the profession. The ECITB have answered that call. Now there is.
The Expo' was very well attended (standing room only in some parts) with speeches and mini-lectures from some of the industries finest, along with some extremely well set-up stalls/stands and exhibitions from most of the controls related companies.Looking forward to next year already.
I went to the controls expo for the first time yesterday (have been overseas for years) and I just wanted to say thanks for organising it. I was very impressed and found it extremely useful.Well done and keep up the good work.

Everything. This is easily the best project controls event of the year and provides a fantastic opportunity to network with your peers and build relationships. The presenters were excellent and demonstrated their detailed knowledge.
Personally, the best thing about the event was the app - being able to have all the info you need just on your phone made the day so much easier to dip in and out of presentations and plan to get the most out of the day. I'm already looking forward to next year's event!
A very professional event compared to Project Challenge which I have attended previously. Better speakers, better location, better AV, better catering, better overall.

I will be better informed for next year and will be more careful over my selection of talks that I attend. All in all though very well organised thank you very much.

Project Controls Expo 2016 ranks as the best event at which we have exhibited in our 24 year history. So much so that RPCuk will, once again, be Platinum sponsors for the 2017 event. The level of interest, from the many visitors to our stand, in the capabilities of RPCuk was unprecedented.
The quality of presentations from respected speakers was extremely impressive and the stature of delegates unmatched. Finally, the level of support that we received from the organisers was exemplary. Project Controls Expo is simply a “must attend” event for anybody involved in successful project delivery.
It gets the balance just about right between being informative and educational and allowing vendors to push their services and offerings

For us, this event is about putting something back into the profession. Thanks to everyone who took their time to complete our survey or sent a personal feedback to the team.
We have been exhibiting at this event for the last 4 years and it has now become the most successful event in Project Controls which exists in UK. It was attended by around 750 professionals which demonstrates the level of emerging focus which there is for excellence in the practice of controls.
The event was well organised and involved substantial opportunity for networking with others working in our space, as well as a number of presentations and workshops on relevant topics. It never ceases to amaze me how such a clearly focused theme can have so many different aspects to cover and different solutions to problems you never knew you had. Presentations at events like this tend to be a case of ‘preaching to the converted’ – by virtue of the fact that they are attending most people agree with the central tenet that investment in doing Project Controls right leads to better outcomes. However, there is a definite benefit from Project Controls becoming more widely recognised as an area of opportunity for individuals and organisations.
Congratulations to Anil Godhawale and his team on another successful event.
It was great to experience over 700+ project management professionals, project controls professionals, project management industry associations, project controls associations, examination organisations, and software vendors from around the world coming together as one all come together as one to exchange ideas and celebrate our profession.
There was something for everyone with multiple streams and all skill levels catered for from beginners to experts. The technical seminars were excellent covering a diverse range of topics including Integrated cost and schedule risk analysis, Total Cost Management, BIM and even artificial intelligence.
Between technical sessions the networking opportunities were fantastic all day as you would expect with such high number of delegates from a wide range of disciplines. One thing is for certain, events like the Project Controls Expo are a great catalyst for getting our profession together and exchanging ideas and this is a great thing for practitioners and for industry.
Well worth the trip from Australia and looking forward wait to next year’s event!
"As a first timer, I’ve got to say it more than met my expectations! It is a real achievement to have an event where over 750 project control professionals from a range of industries (Oil, Gas, Pharmaceutical, Construction, Nuclear, Infrastructure, Defence, Government) all get together to share knowledge and form lasting relationships
My credit and appreciation goes out to Anil Godhawale and his team who have turned this into a must go to Project Control event, on the world stage. It is now in its 5th year! Yes the event had software providers, sales consultants and recruiters. You could be excused for being slightly cynical about the high level of salesman ship that always talks place at Expos. But for me this Expo offered so much more!
Networking : - I spoke with an apprentice at BAE systems, who was very switched on to business psychology and the importance of team work to deliver successful projects. I also met with a client relationship manager from a Training company who is taking the world of e-learning by storm. You can now get results from a Prince Practitioner course immediately! ….no more waiting around for your result and getting tense. Later on in the day I was with members of the ACostE council, discussing how project control professionals can add to the UK’s knowledge base. What a great mix!
The App : - I came to the event armed with an Expo App on my iphone which enabled me to view other delegates’ details and form connections on line. Also I could view the upcoming agenda. The delegate can select classes of interest and with one tap of the App; it sets up your own personal schedule. Wouldn’t it be good if this kind of forward thinking could be brought in to the work place? After all we are in 2015.
Key Note Speech : - The event kicked off with a Key note speech from Steven Norris of Driver Group and an ex Minister of Transport. The speech was entitled “Is Infrastructure back?” Steven engaged with the mixed audience and gave us all room for thought, with an answer “Yes Infrastructure is back!” He was very upbeat about the investment going in to UK infrastructure over the next 5 years. Highways England was presented and CP5 and CP6 investment to 2029. The icing on the cake for the UK is the set up of the National Infrastructure Commission to look at what we need and when we need to do it. Steven laced his presentation with facts such as the UK having the fastest economic growth rate in the G7. It was fascinating to listen to his message that connectivity (via infrastructure) leads to productivity in society. In simple terms investment in the UK’s roads and transport links, to quote Steven “lets people without jobs get to jobs without people”. This came with a warning, nonetheless, that the UK does have a worrying skill gap in engineering and manufacturing that needs addressing. A clear message was for vocational training to be part of a national skills plan to ensure jobs are for life and transferable around the world. Project control plays a big part in the future through training and enables projects, such as the Olympics, to be delivered early and on budget.
Knowledge Share : - For those readers that could not attend the venue at the venue at the Emirates Stadium (London) was set out in 4 zones, depending on the delegates interests: Master Class Zone ; Technology Zone ; Workshop Zone ; Back to Basics Zone, I attended 4 classes and networked with over 30 people, snapping up a handful of business cards. The areas for discussion from the day are vast and I recommend for people to look up the event on the web and twitter for lots of people’s thoughts. There is one class that I must reference in more detail before I go as it resonated with me greatly. The class was in the Technology Zone and was entitled “Data Driven Decision Making” by Russell Berkeley of Darbus Ltd. I hope you enjoy my reflection below…your decision.
Data Driven Decision Making : - Russell challenged the belief that exists in the world of project management that we create data to analyse, understand and then make a decision. He questioned the audience as to whether this actually happens? Does all the information we produce (you know plans, risk logs, financial information) actually aid our decision making? Or do we just get bombarded with data. Russell spoke of how the word “data” can even be interpreted differently, depending on whether you are making a tactical or strategic decision. For example an engineer will create data, such as spreadsheets, programmes and numbers to support opinion. This is tactical decision making with complex data. In a strategic setting, i.e. an MD who asks for “more data to make a decision”; the data means options. The real insightful part was when Russell related the 2 types of decision making back to the role of a Project Manager (PM). He stated that the PM’s role is to facilitate “effective” decisions by taking tactical data and presenting options to the board. Always give at least 3 options. The presentation continued by exploring how we make decisions and this is where the fun really began. Ground breaking research by Antonio Damasio, a professor of Neuroscience, has shown that emotions play a central role in decision making. Russell demonstrated how we need emotions to make a decision, using some funny slides. There was one slide showing the thought process of a lady choosing between a £30 next hand bag and a £19,900 Louis Vuitton bag. Emotion must be involved as it can’t just be based on data otherwise Louis Vuitton wouldn’t exist. I thoroughly enjoyed this class and more work is needed on decision making in project control. To conclude it is clear that the seasoned Project control professional could take a first step by identifying the top 10 SV and CV on a project and provide recovery options to the Board, with the PM of course. Then I guess an emotionally driven decision can be made.
Over 750 Project Controls professionals from a range of industries representing 30 nations attended the Project Controls Expo, 2015. The event now in its 5th year continues to grow. We extend our congratulations to Anil Godhawale and his team for organizing such a successful and interesting event.
This was our 5th year at the Project Controls Expo and I certainly feel it exceeded previous expectations. The Expo is a great platform for networking and facilitated our meeting with number of candidates and clients who I have been speaking to for many years but have never had the opportunity of meeting face to face. We learnt a great deal about what project control’s individuals are particularly passionate about in their relevant area.
The mobile app was an excellent tool for not only networking with attendees but giving full access to presentations from the day, surveys, polls, maps and much more. The event’s agenda was available prior to the event and on demand all day so the team could keep to a schedule and not miss out on speeches of interest. The social media interface in particular was great for sharing instant updates!
With a range of master class sessions, case studies, workshops, presentations and speeches, there was something for everyone. The opportunities to meet a range of professionals and extending knowledge of the industry proved to be endless, A great area for networking proved to be the extensive lunch buffet a munch and meet with several familiar faces! Here at TRS, we are proud to be key sponsor to the Project Controls Expo and look forward to many more successful events in the years to come. With an expected turnout of 750-900 professionals, we are already looking forward to attending next year’s event in 2016.
I found Expo 2015 far more structured than other ones. The presenters were excellent and and their knowledge very detailed. I recommended this to everyone in Project Controls. I also got chance to meet up with old friends and find out what is new via presentations and at the workshops.
The software section was great and felt more of a tutorial than a hard sell. I wonder was this something that happened or did Expo staff impose this on them:-) Either way it was refreshing. The earlier finish led to more people being about for the social which was nice and offered very relaxed evening.
Next year, if given an opportunity I would love to talk about portfolio planning and the need for a robust coding structure.
Dear Anil Godhawale,
You and your Team have again surpassed yourselves by having an even better Project Controls Expo than last years excellent event. My personal thanks to you for doing so much in promoting the understanding and application of Project Controls.
You are a real credit to our Profession, and I am sure you will go on and accomplish much more in the future.
Kind regards,
We are proud to display some of the fantastic client testimonials and delegates feedback.

Donna Hannah - Self Employed
On behalf of the Association of Cost Engineers I would like to thank you for giving ACostE the opportunity to participate in the Expo. We found the Expo to be very successful in both introducing ACost to a wide range of project control professionals and also to make make contact with many of our members and associates old and new.
I congratulate you on organising such an excellent event in a spectacular venue, and I look forward to hearing of your plans for 2015.
My sincere congratulations on the great success of the Project Controls Expo. The venue, organisation, presentations, refreshments and everything about the event was excellent. I really do appreciate the hard work and risks associated with an event like this, and I am delighted at its success, which you deserve. I look forward to your next event.
Alec Ray - ACostE, Vice President and International Director
So Expo knocked it out of the park again this year by hosting a fantastic project controls event within the amazing Emirates stadium home to Arsenal football club. The feeling was more around community and less of a sales pitch from sponsors who all had something to add to the event from a system to management perspective.
The attendees clearly reflected the view that this was a must see event as it attracted many high level controls individuals including our own Stephen Jones who spoke on the topic of agile and earned value. With three streams of speakers running in parallel throughout the day, the audience was spoilt for choice at the vast selection of subjects covered. We couldn’t attend them all, but from what we did attend here are our highlights;
Key note speaker David Birch regaled us with his many years of experience and whilst it is always great to hear David’s thoughts on project controls it was his rallying call around professional recognition and career growth that really resonated. He called for a community of practice around controls rightly pointing out that more can be done around sharing knowledge outside of events like these and looked to the APM and chartership to spearhead this vision. This theme of collaboration, or lack of, was also echoed and articulated by George Haddad, VP of product strategy for Oracle, who showed how far the construction industry was behind in this regard.
With collaboration being the central topic of the day, Ben Vaughan discussed his experiences on collaborative working between suppliers and customers and offered some tactical advice on fostering a more collaborative approach to establish a robust project controls environment that can be trusted by both parties. Jim Malkin, a fellow PMC SIG member took us through six areas for improving visibility and presented a framework for determining and improving project maturity which further demonstrated the importance of visibility and collaboration.
On the more specific technical skills side, David Bordoli discussed how important progress, position and prediction was to project delivery success, and provided an alternative approach to predicting project completion for projects who do not utilise earned value management. Andy Abu-Bakar then dove into the world of schedule risk analysis (SRA) and took us on a journey through an SRA process, pointing out common pitfalls and offering some tactical solutions to ensuring robust SRAs are conducted on complex, long-term engineering projects. Glenn Hide then talked us through the benefits of the NEC3 framework and imparted some of his substantial knowledge, providing valuable insight for both supplier side and client side parties to enable them to manage their project effectively within the NEC3 construct, focusing mainly on the topic of programme acceptance.
Overall the speakers at this year’s expo were of an extremely high quality and it once again proved that events like these can be opportunities to enlighten each other and spark debate and not just focus as a place for vendors to solicit business. We are thoroughly looking forward to next year, long may it continue!
Always good to see what is being practically achieved rather than just the theory / sales pitch
Stuart Collin - Mace Group
It was well run and the speakers knew there content. The whole experience was positive.
Helina Leck - National Grid
I thought the NEC speak was brilliant. He could have held a surgery at the event so people could ask questions in private. I enjoyed the networking But most of all the tour was brilliant.
Steve Jones - University of WarwickThe ambience was fantastic and it was interesting having conversations with fellow professionals and sharing ideas about different aspects of the industry. If the same level of professionalism is maintained, i will be happy to attend every year.
Yvonne Amanchukwu - Technip
A dynamic and interesting event, presented by Project Control professionals for PC professionals, with a low fee structure to encourage attendance from delegates and sponsors. This seems to be a winning combination, given the increasing attendance, year-on-year. Looking forward to 2015

The venue was superb! All arrangements were excellent, it was very comfortable to attend a presentation which was not is a small closed room, it was very good that we could walk through different areas while the presentations were taking place and still did not disturb them.
Catering was excellent! The exhibition area could have been expanded - I mean more desks with more companies but overall the venue and event were absolutely fantastic!
Learning from really good, engaging speakers on topics that they were heavily involved in.
Cat van Doorn - Highways Authroity, UK

The Project Controls Expo 2012 was an excellent event staged at the prestigious venue of Twickenham Rugby Stadium. It witnessed an extensive and eminent group of speakers from within the Project Controls industry and beyond who spoke on a wide and varied selection of current subjects
It was tailored for the day with 3 simultaneous sessions being held at once covering intermediate and advanced levels as well as practical case studies so there was a considerable choice for all attendees. Exhibitors and major software providers also showcased their products and delegates were able to assess the performance of numerous products within one location.
We are pleased with the results from Project Controls Expo. The organizational structure was exemplary and we shall attend again next year.
Roland Horat - CEO SuperTech Project Management, Australia
I've recently presented at the Project Controls Expo at Twickenham. The event was supremely organised and was truly a very professional event. It called for three venues hosting 7 speakers concurrently, as well as central areas where sponsors, delegates and speakers could meet.
To pull the event off with great success showed an excellent level of coordination and the management of detail by organisiug team.
